From Pins to Purchase: What Really Happens

One of the very first questions I ask during an Impact Map interview is this:

“Why Pinterest? What do you hope the platform will do for you?”

Nineteen times out of twenty, the answer is immediate:

“Sell more books.”

And I get it. Of course that’s the goal.

But I also take that answer as a cue—a gentle opening to shift the conversation just a bit.

Because Pinterest isn’t a magic pill.
It’s not a silver bullet.
And it’s definitely not a straight shot to sales, sales, sales.

What it is… is something far more powerful.

Pinterest is a visual search engine.

And when we understand how it works—when we align our messaging, our images, and our SEO strategy—something remarkable happens:
our content begins to show up.

Not just on Pinterest…
but increasingly on Google… and even in AI search results. (Yes, really. I’ve been seeing this with client accounts lately. So cool.)

Let me show you what I mean—with a metaphor. You know I can’t resist one.

Think of a pin as a book placed face-out on a bookshelf.

That shelf?
It’s your website.
Your TPT store.
Your Etsy shop.
Your Shopify store.

A shopper walks by and notices the cover.

That’s an impression.

If the cover catches their eye, they might pick it up…
read the back…
flip through a few pages…

That’s engagement.

And here’s the important part:
even now, a sale is not guaranteed.

They might love it.
They might hesitate.
They might save it for later.

Because they’re shopping.

(In fact, over 500 million people use Pinterest this way—every day.)

Now, if they’re getting closer to a decision, they’ll want to know more.

So they click.

That’s your outbound click—and it’s a pivotal moment.

Because this is where Pinterest’s job ends…
and your platform takes over.

The actual purchase?
That happens on your site, your shop, your store.

That’s the conversion.

So when we step back and look at the full picture, here’s what we see:

Pinterest isn’t the checkout line.
It’s the front door.

It’s the top of the funnel—the place where curiosity begins, where interest sparks, where discovery happens.

And our job?

To make that first moment count.

To create pins that stop the scroll…
invite the click…
and beautifully represent the wonder of what you’ve created.

Because from there, the journey unfolds—
often in a matter of seconds.

And when all the pieces are working together?

That’s when the magic actually happens.
